Best Homemade Guacamole (Simple, Fresh, & Healthy)
The best classic homemade guacamole – made in just 5 minutes! Creamy, zesty, and perfect for chips, tacos, salads, or wraps.

Why you’ll love this recipe:
- Homemade guacamole is creamy & zesty (not lacking in flavor one bit)
- Quick and easy to make, coming together in 5 minutes
- Tastes great as is, or with any add-ins you prefer (see recipe for optional add-ins)
- Great option for meal prep, or to bring to a party
- Only 6 simple ingredients
- A very customizable recipe
What you’ll need for guacamole:
- 4 ripe avocados, peeled and pitted
- 2-4 tbsp fresh lime juice (depending on preference)
- 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice (this is key)
- 1 tsp pink Himalayan salt
- ½ tsp ground black pepper
- 1-2 tsp garlic powder depending on preference, or could sub fresh garlic
Ingredient notes:
Avocados – the star of the show! For guacamole, choose avocados that are ripe or that will help you achieve your desired texture once mashed. Softer, more ripe avocados will result in a smooth & creamy guacamole. More firm avocados will result in a chunky, less smooth guacamole. Either texture you prefer, the flavor of the end result will not be compromised!
Pink salt – essential for enhancing all the fantastic flavors in the guacamole.
Ground black pepper – optional, but adds another layer of flavor that I personally think is essential to this guacamole recipe!
Garlic powder – another essential ingredient! Of course can be omitted if you do not like or can not eat garlic. Fresh garlic can be used instead of garlic powder if you prefer.
Limes – the second star of the show! When shopping for limes, you’ll want to try to choose limes that seem like they will yield the most juice so as to not have to go through too many when making the guacamole. Pro-tip: limes with a thicker, more rough/bumpy skin usually yield less juice and are on the dry side, while limes with a smooth and thin skin will typically yield the most juice. To get the most juice out the limes, place on a flat surface, press the heel of your palm on the lime and with medium pressure, roll back and forth a few times until you feel the fruit soften a bit. This process releases maximum juice!
Lemon – my not-so-secret ingredient to the perfect flavor balance in my guacamole! It’s one of those “once you try it you won’t stop” sort of things. Friends and family have asked me for so long what my secret is for such a basic but great tasting guac and well, this is it folks. It’s that simple!
Chips – as a self-proclaimed snack queen, this is a very integral part of the experience! You have to love the chips you eat, and for me, it’s always and forever Siete brand chips. A few other brands I tend to go for from time to time are Trader Joe’s cassava flour chips or quinoa & black bean chips, Late July, or any organic corn chips the store might have if I can’t find my go-to brands.
How to make guacamole (Step-by-Step):
- Combine: Add peeled avocado flesh to a bowl and mash with a fork to your preferred texture – chunky or smooth
- Add flavor: Stir in lime juice, lemon juice, salt, pepper, and garlic powder until combined
- Add-Ins: Here is where you would add any other extras you prefer such as onion, tomato, jalapeno, salsa, cilantro, etc.
- Serve: Serve immediately with your favorite chips, or as a topping for tacos, salads, or wraps.
- Enjoy!

Pro Tips for Best Results:
- Use fresh lime & lemon juice: bottled juice lacks the brightness and flavor that make this recipe great.
- Avoid over-mashing: gently stir until just combined so your guac stays creamy but not mushy.
Recipe Variations:
I love this recipe plain, with no ad-ins. But if you’re someone who loves a loaded homemade guacamole, some yummy options are:
- Onion
- Tomato
- Cilantro
- Jalapeno
- Salsa
- Fresh garlic
FAQ’s:
Can I make homemade guacamole ahead of time?
Yes – store in an airtight container in the fridge for 24-48 hours. You can also scoop onto a sheet tray in portions, freeze, then add to a freezer bag/container and store frozen for up to 6 months.
Why did my guacamole turn brown?
Avocados oxidize and turn color after exposure to air. The lemon and lime juice in this homemade guacamole recipe, along with airtight covering, help slow browning.
Can I make it spicy or mild?
Yes – that’s the beauty of this recipe! Super customizable. Add more jalapeno or spicy salsa for heat, or omit altogether for mild.
